I am asking myself too but i think they worked for the rich people in the underworld MISs van duuren
nothing was buried with them only their beautiful soul.
Hades was so feared because he is the ruler of The Underworld. If he enjoyed a soul he wanted to take, he would do it personally, Hermes would usually take the soul to the River Styx to have the soul get to the Underworld
The ferryman Charon takes every departed soul across the river styx in the Underworld.
It depends upon the mythology. In Greek myth it usually depends upon where in the Underworld you are - or are going, but it is usually that when you die the boatman takes your ghost directly to the Halls of Hades to be judged - if you have the coins. Otherwise you must spend a hundred years waiting to earn passage. The same is true in part with Egypt mythology where every soul must undertake a adventurous journey though the lands of the Underworld to be judged by the gods and your soul weighed against the feather of Ma'at.
