He certainly had to be sure that his plays could not be taken as endorsing an illegal religion. Unlike some of his fellow playwrights, Shakespeare appears to have had no trouble keeping in good stead with the censors. One way of doing so was to write on stories which had good staying power and were not topical satires or commentaries on the events of the day.
