In effect the US did stop the Holocaust. By aiding the Allied victory, in defeating Germany, the Holocaust was stopped. If the US could have stopped it sooner, it is possible that they could have, but at great cost.
The reason no one tried to stop the holocaust right away was either because no one knew about or that the German population were indoctrinated into hating the Jews. The allies later found out about the holocaust around 1943.

A very little difference between holocaust or genocide. Its the same. Killing of innocent people. People raise their voice, so someone, somewhere, sometime will listen..and raise his (her) or their voice.
One cannot say seventy years later what should have happened: The US did what it could at the time.
Some people helped individuals during the Holocaust. Nobody tried to 'prevent the Holocaust' - even the Allies did not try to do that.
Mainly the Vietnam War ?
