Scripturally speaking, a marriage was a contract...a 'covenant'(Malachi 2:14) and though no religious or legal ceremony was required, the marriage often included festive clothing, a gathering of friends and great joy. The new husband would go to the home of his fiancee, and escort her, publicly, to HIS home, and they would be legally married.
