Columbus received the Castilian equivalent of a knighthood, the honorific Don, as part of the contract, called the Capitulaciones de Santa Fe, that he signed with the Spanish Monarchs on 17 April 1492. That contract also gave him the titles of Admiral of the Ocean Sea, Viceroy, and Governor-General of any lands that he acquired for Spain.
