Francis Ford Coppola directed an adaptation of the classic S. E. Hinton young adult novel in 1983. It followed the book quite closely, and cast what now seems like an entire generation of young actors in the principal roles: Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Mat Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell....
A more complete version was released in 2005 with more than 20 minutes of footage not in the original theatrical release -- I guess Coppola liked the book.
As a sidebar, the Tulsa drive-in theater used in the movie burned down recently. Please visit the link in the related links section below to make a donation.

Yes she played the nurse that asked dally were his robe was.
The Insiders.
Yes.
Read the book
No
-the characters -the plot -the ending
Nobut the outsiders is a really good book. and the movie, its pretty cool. actuly i think there is another.
No its not a graphic novel its a book with only words. (Their is also a movie for the outsiders.)
The book and the movie are similar but they cut many parts of the movie to make it shorter but they still have the same characters even though their appearances change a little. The plot is still the same and many of the events that were in the book were also in the movie. My advice to you would be to read the novel for it is a very interesting novel that most people enjoy, the movie is great too but there are alot of details missing
Pony boy
He antagonizes them during the movie.
In the book "The Outsiders", it clearly states that Ponyboy and Sodapop are their birth names, NOT nicknames.
Johnny's nickname in both the book and the movie is Johnnycakes.
