Microsoft Word 2007 is just a newer and better version of 2003. The file format is *.docx instead of *.doc.

The 2007 file format is actually a form of a zip file. If you change the file extension from docx to zip and unzip the file, you will find the 2003 file (*.doc) in the archive.
The difference between MS Word 2003 and 2007 is mainly in the way of how you work with the program.

MS 2007 has instead of "we are used to" interface a new interface called ribbon toolbar. But the philosophy of the program as well as of working with it remains the same.

Microsoft Word 2003 introduces research tools to check on definitions, explanations, and translations of words or phrases used in the document. Word 2003 also includes more templates, such as in PowerPoint, and more ease of downloading templates from online. Word 2007 changes the way a lot of things work. The largest changes that I have noticed are with customizable toolbars (they have a ribbon instead) that can't really be customized anymore, and less flexibility with graphics, although some new graphics features have been added, overall it is harder to customize. Many of the same features are there, but just hard to find because they have been renamed, or placed differently.

MS 2007 is more function than MS 2003. MS 2007 have different and more colorful interface, which take a while used to it. MS 2007 support of new document format docx (XML documents format).Document format which allow users of old word software to open the document, but document that create from MS 2007 cannot be open in MS 2003. MS 2007 take up more spaces than MS 2003, and MS 2007 is harder to work. It cand make a document, presentation look a lot better and colorful, it do a lot of improvement. MS 2003 research tools to check on definition, explanation and translation of word or phases used in the document. MS 2003 includes more templates, such as in PowerPoint and more and more ease of downloading templates from online. MS 2007 changes the way a lot of things word. The largest changes is the tool bar and its less flexibility with graphic.

New "Ribbon" interface would require about two weeks to learn. After two weeks of pain and suffering your productivity should be almost as good as with MS Word 2003.

They run about the same, but are not backwards compatible. If one creates a doc in MS Word 2007 and tries to open it in MS Word 2003, the older application will not know what to do with it or possibly won't be able to even open the file.

It's also a marketing thing ... discontinue one version and create a new version so most people will get the new updated version, for a fee of course, thus lining the company profits.

2007 will be an updated version with more options available. I am unsure of the specifics though

Word 2007 is and updated version of word 2003 with different new features. I find it unnecessarily complicated to do the average word processing or spread sheet job. It takes several more mouse clicks to do some very simple things. The thing that I find the most difficult is the "help" options. Things that I am accustomed to doing routinely, I can't find and when I select help to find it, nine out of ten times, I get tons of information and instructions but not for what I need.
Word 2007 has more features and obviously it's newer in both version and style

One would say that almost none.

The biggest difference is the upper toolbar where MS Word 2007 has so called "ribbon" toolbar that makes the work with MS Word 2007 little confusing at first.

There are lots of differences between the two although they are the same program with different edition years. As a result, anyone with Microsoft Office 2003 should keep on reading to learn about some of the differences of Microsoft Office 2007.

One of the changes is the digital signature. For instance, if you are in Microsoft Office 2007 training you will learn that with this edition the digital signature is formatted with XMLDSig, which is different than what you learned in Microsoft Office 2003 training. Also, the Microsoft office training courses will teach you that in Office 2007 you will find the digital signature under File, Finalize Document, Signatures rather than in Tools, Options, Security, Digital Signatures. The digital signatures were changed to be more intuitive and easier to find.

Another change that you will learn about in all of your Microsoft office training programs is that the add in tool for Office 2003 was removed. It was replaced by a document inspector that can run multiple times at once which makes it easer to clean up documents.

In Microsoft Office 2007 there is now some versioning offered. Before in Microsoft Office 2003 you could only enable or disable versioning, but now versioning numbers are included and numbers such as 3.3 may be used as well as whole numbers like 3.

Another change that exists in Microsoft Office 2007 that is different from Microsoft Office 2003 is that Windows Rights Management Client v. 1.0 is no longer supported. A new client version of Windows Rights Management Client SP1 is used in Microsoft Office 2007 and the new version is easy to install and no change is seen when the new version is installed.

Yet another change that occurred is the Send for Review feature that could be found in Microsoft Office 2003 under File, Send to, Mail Recipient (for review). These entry points do not exist in Microsoft Office 2007.

There are of course many other changes that occur in Microsoft Office 2007 that Microsoft Office 2003 users must learn and get accustomed to. However, there are not so many that users who upgrade will have too difficult of a time converting.
