Best Answer

Platinum is much stronger than other metals, it hold gems more securely and its also hypoallergenic which means that it wont cause any rashes or irritation since it doesn't contain any nickel. Its also more expensive. Gold is much more common and less expensive.

Both platinum and gold are among the most precious of metals. Although platinum is the most precious because of its rarity and durability, gold is still the most traditional because of it's cost-effectiveness and availability in both white and gold.

Durability

Platinum is 60 percent heavier than gold and is denser and stronger, making it more resistant to damage. Neither gold nor platinum will tarnish, although platinum will retain its luster longer.

Display

Platinum only comes in a silver color, while gold can be yellow or white. Although a silver-toned metal is the more popular trend, couples may want to choose gold if they desire a yellow metal.

The main distinguishing physical characteristic between gold and platinum is its color. Platinum is naturally white and gold is naturally yellow. Another difference is the cost, with platinum being more expensive. Additionally, platinum is stronger and more durable than gold.

Is platinum more dense then gold?

Yes. Platinum is more dense than gold. Elemental platinum is 21.45 g/mL vs 19.3 g/mL (in standard conditions). Note that the difference is even more pronounced in jewelry because gold and platinum are mixed with other metals to form alloys: 950 (95%) platinum is typically around 20.1 g/mL, while jewelers' gold ranges from 10.9 to 17.8 g/mL depending on caret. So while the difference in densities for elemental gold and platinum is rather small, it is fairly easy to discern the different density of gold and platinum jewelry.
