∙ 8y agoTo a certain degree, firmware is a type of software. For instance, the ROM BIOS is a type of firmware. The main difference is that the firmware is needed for the system or device to work at all and comes installed in the device. You don't have to add BIOS code to a computer, though you can upgrade it; it simply comes with the motherboard.

Hi, the difference of firmware and drivers is the application of this piece of software. The most electronic hardware only needs firmware to run basicly. E.G. a DVD-player needs firmware to know how to read a CD or DVD. But to have it accessed under a operating system like Windows you need a driver to access the CD or DVD or watch a movie.
