Domestic animals have been selectively bred by humans over many, many generations and sometimes for thousands of years. Domestic animals for example dogs, are believed to have been domesticated from ancient wild wolves although the details are long lost in history. Dogs were selectively bred for particular traits such as "friendliness," docility around humans, and the "instinct to protect" humans.

Selective breeding means finding a dog for instance which exhibits the behaviors desirable to the breeder, and allowing this dog to breed with another dog with similar traits. For example, if a breeder wants a medium size dog, that bards very little, but is muscular and strong, yet gentle with humans and children, the the breeder picks a male dog with those characteristics and allows him to mate with an equally well matched female.

Domestic animals are usually of use to humans in some way, and often develop bonds with humans.

Some animals that one might think are well suited to domestication like the Zebra are not. The Zebra is well suited for use by humans except for one thing . . . they cannot be broken from the habit of biting an kicking humans.

Pets are domestic animals, but the difference may be that pets live with a family or person in a house and domestic animals are kept to use for something, such as sheep or cows or horses. These are examples of domestic animals that are not necessarily pets. But they can be both.

Domestic animals are animals that have been tamed by Humans, live with and work with us, and are kept as pets. Some of the earliest domestic animals are dogs and cats. Cats were so important in ancient Egypt that one of their gods was the cat god, Bastet. Their importance was most likely due to keeping the grain supplies safe by catching and eating the rodents that invaded said grain. Dogs were used in ancient times for hunting, protection, and as companions. Other domestic animals are: horses, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, etc. Wild animals live in the wild, like wolves, deer, big cats (i.e. lions, tigers). Although these wild animals can be tamed, they are not considered domesticated animals.

The answer is simple. A wild animal belongs in the wild away from people. Domestic animals usually live with people. Although for an animal to be considered 'domestic' it has to have been in captivity for a long time. And I mean like 100s of years.Wild animals are not mastered by any human; they may leave in wilderness and try to avoid the human.
