In a regular magnetic compass, the needle is a magnet. One end is the south pole and the other end is the north pole. Magnets are affected by other magnets. If a magnet is placed near a magnetic compass, the north pole of the compass's needle is attracted by the south pole of the magnet, and the south pole of the compass's needle is attracted by the north pole of the magnet.
why was a magnetic compass so important
No. I assume you mean a magnetic compass. A magnetic compass reacts to magnetic fields; the magnetic south pole of Earth is not exactly at the geographic north pole, so at some points of the Earth's surface, the magnetic compass will actually point south instead of north. Also, a magnetic compass will be influenced by other magnetic fields, e.g., current-carrying wires.No. I assume you mean a magnetic compass. A magnetic compass does. Though there are other types of compass that do not
From what I know, there are three types of compasses. There is the original chines compass which is also known as the magnetic compass. there is also another compass called the gyrocompass. there's another one known as the astrocompass, and one also known as the box compass. ++++ It's a bit simpler than that. Magnetic compass, gyrocompass (which uses the inertia of a spinning flywheel) and electronic versions based on satellite navigation systems. The heading photo shows two magnetic compasses typical of those used by walkers & climbers.
The magnet in the compass is attracted to the magnetic field in the Earth's core. The N on the compass always point to magnetic north.... Don't get that confused with geographical north. They are different. Hope this helps.

A compass. The North magnetic pole is in the direction of the N on the compass. Therefore, the North magnetic pole is in fact a magnetic field south pole since it *attracts* the north magnetic field pole of the compass magnet.
No,a Gyrosyn compass is a combination of a Magnetic compass and Direct reading compass.

prismatic surveying and surveying compass.
No. The true north pole and the magnetic north pole are in different locations. The compass will point at the magnetic north pole. If you happened to be somewhere between the two north poles, the compass will point exactly backwards!
