When Alexander the Great arrived in India, his party noticed that the Hindu god Shiva had a lot in common with the Greek god Dionysos. They concluded that the two must be one and the same god. And since the Indians seemed to honour this Western god, Alexander's men figured that Dionysos must have visited India during his travels and spiritually conquered the Indians in times immemorial. After Alexander's discovery, Dionysos was often depicted on a tiger to honour his Indian conquests. Sometimes we see him on a panther, but it is likely that many Greek and Roman artists did not know what a tiger actually looks like, since the animal lived well outside their realm.
