Some radio controlled toys are safe but, not all radio controlled toys are safe. For Example: The Batteries will contain acids and if you overcharge or overheat the battery those acids will start to leak. If it does leak dispose of the battery quickly and carefully.
Used batteries are not yet completely dead, so it is unsafe to dispose of them in regular trash. Not everywhere has recycling centers for batteries. Contact your local government for disposal practices.
Car batteries have lead, which is very toxic to the environment. Take them to a hazardous waste disposal point for them to discarded properly. AAA, AA and D batteries are not harmful so they can be put together with normal garbage.
With proper disposal, batteries have elements that can be recycled, conserving the resource and saving the energy expended to manufacture. Additionally, if batteries are allowed to leach into the water table, the acids are toxic to man and animals.
Though batteries can be very helpful in our everyday life, nevertheless, they can become dangerous, if not managed correctly after their use. This happens because batteries contain chemical substances (heavy metals: mercury, cadmium, nickel, lead), which can cause severe impacts on human health when they are dumped or discarded together with household waste. Discarding batteries in the household waste stream increases the toxicity levels of the landfills, because of the heavy metals contained in the batteries. Heavy metals can pollute the underground water table, the soil and the water, leading to their penetration in the food chain, thus directly affecting human health.

To remove stuck batteries from a device, try tapping the device gently to dislodge the batteries. If that doesn't work, use a small tool like a screwdriver to carefully pry the batteries out. Be cautious not to damage the device or the batteries.
From my research, electric radio controlled airplanes are powered by rechargeable batteries. A battery used for this purpose is the 150 mAH 3.7V Lipoly Battery. Here is a link to the battery information: http://www.hobby-lobby.com/blade_msr_upgrade_150_mah_3.7v_lipoly_battery_176851_prd1.htm
Discarding the old letter made her feel bad. You can help the environment by recycling what you can, and discarding only what you have to.
