Candiru is a small parasitic freshwater catfish that lives in the streams of South America. It is attracted to metabolic discharges, such as urea and ammonia, and follows the scent to the host. It can implant itself in any small orifice, including the gills of other fish, an animal rectum, or a urethra. Due to the barbs and scales of the fish, removal is usually impossible without surgery.

The greatest danger is from potential infection if the fish remains lodged for a long period of time.
