The Bible says that Satan is a fallen angel and he brought with him 1/3 of the heavenly hosts. So the first purpose of angels is to help fight demons of Satan from harming Christians by the power of their prayers. This is supported by Scripture that describes demon forces that have control of cities or areas. In one or maybe 2 places, a prophet prayed for God to send help and an angel appeared a day or so late and said that he was held up by an encounter with demon forces.
