Diploid means to contain two sets of chromosomes. This is what the somatic (non-sex) cells of most organisms are.

Haploid means to contain half the number of chromosomes of a diploid cell. This is what gametes (sex cells - sperm/egg) are.

If I'm not mistaken, Haploid Cells have only 23 chromosomes that are needed for a human. They're the sex cells that meet and form a zygote. Therefore, a diploid cell is a full cell of 46 chromosomes, just waiting to become a full person.

Diploid cells have two copies of every variety of chromosome, one maternally derived, one paternally derived.

Haploid cells have only a single copy of every chromosome type.

Some organisms are exclusively haploid (bacteria for example) others are predominantly diploid (most multicellular creatures fall under this category). Although there are all kinds of complexities where you'll find a multicellular organism that consists entirely of haploid cells or a multicellular organism that undergoes a haploid stage in its lifecycle, or a multicellular organism that is actually polyploid, the "normal" condition for multicellular animals (the one you can assume to be the case unless you're told otherwise) is for all body cells to be diploid and haploidy reserved solely for specialized reproductive cells (i.e. sperm and egg cells in animals are haploid).
