Why is gerrymander done?

Gerrymandering is done so that representatives can be guaranteed to be reelected. For example, a district is drawn so that it looks very unusual (example searching "Luis Gutierrez's 4th Congressional District" on Google Images), but the representatives know that the people in the district they have drawn all have similar views, views that can get said representative reelected because of the way they view their candidate.Gerrymandering is also done to change the final proportion of representatives one side to favour one party. It does this by "cracking and packing": "cracking" means cracking majority support for the other party, by removing your opponent's supporters and/or adding your own supporters. "Packing" means putting all of your opposition supporters into fewer districts, so that they are weaker elsewhere. As a result, a party can end up with more power than their popular vote, for example: receive 35% of the popular vote, but 60% of the seats.
