Black mambas, like many other species of snakes, do not sleep in the same way that humans do. Snakes do not have eyelids, so they cannot close their eyes to sleep. Instead, they enter a state of reduced activity called brumation, which is similar to hibernation in mammals. During brumation, snakes will find a cool, dry place to rest and will sleep for longer periods of time than they do during other parts of the year. However, they can still be awakened easily and will become active if they sense danger or the presence of food.
