Yes, a 4x4 will use comparatively more fuel than a similar sized vehicle without that feature. The reason is because the 4x4 mechanism increases the friction in order to get the best traction on all surfaces.
The Ford 150 is currently the best brand of pick up for gas mileage. They are the number 1 seller in the US. The Dodge Ram V6, 4x4 pick up truck beats any of the competition out there with up to 23mpg highway miles. Some of the other good gas mileage pick up trucks include the Dodge Dakota, Toyota Tacoma, and the Chevrolet Colorado.
A good 4x4 small truck with good gas mileage is a Chevy or ford pickup truck. Those have always been some of the small 4x4 trucks that have had good gas mileage.
If you are comparing two trucks of the same make, model, and year then yes a 4x4 will consume more gas due to the extra weight of the axle, transfer case, additional drive line, and heavier front suspension, as well as the increased friction that the additional drive train causes. However if you get stuck in a two wheel drive truck you will be wishing very much that you had a 4x4 regardless of the cost of gas!
Compared to cars, pickup trucks get bad gas mileage. However, if you can find a hybrid or especially fuel-efficient model of truck (for example, Ford trucks tend to be slightly more fuel efficient than Toyota trucks) you may be able to get good gas mileage.
Yes, diesel trucks generally get much better gas mileage than regular gas trucks. They even sometimes get better gas mileage than hybrid trucks.
Well this would depend on what size of pick up truck you are referring to but the top ten best gas mileage pick up trucks of 2011 list the Dodge Ram 1500 as most fuel efficient.
seems I'm answering my own question... turns out my 84 4x4 Jimmy with a 6.2 diesel and 700r4 trans runs the same 3.07 gear ratio as my 83 Sierra Classic 4x4 pick up with a 305 gas and 700r4 trans.
Canadian and American made cars and trucks now put the fuel pump in the gas tank.
Gas is better to use than diesel for trucks for offroading.
18 mpg <--- lol, no! the Nissan 720 series trucks are very easy on gas... at the worst 23, more like 26 if its running right
No.
Smaller trucks with better gas mileage tend to be in the $15,000-$25,000 range, while larger trucks and hybrid trucks tend to be much more expensive - around $40,000-$50,000.
