The Catholic Church Itself believes and teaches so. In fact, it is one of the most fundamental doctrines of the Catholic Faith that, "There is no salvation outside the Church". This doctrine has been greatly ignored by the Liberal forces in the Catholic Church today as it is a direct contradiction to their efforts in the Ecumenical Movement which pushes for the mutual recognition and respect of all denominations that sport the appellation "Christian" and even pagan religions besides.

The reason the Church makes such a weighty claim is quite simple. The Catholic Church is merely echoing the voice of Its founder, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father but through Me." As the original Christian Church founded by Christ Himself the Church is the pillar and ground of the Truth. Truth by its very nature is exclusive; it only accepts its own and is intolerant to all error. The Catholic Church believes Itself both the guardian and preacher of Christ's Truth to the world and maintains that if anyone is to follow Christ they must not merely follow Him in name or in those things they like or which sound good to themselves, but in all those things that Christ taught, the whole of His revelation, all His teachings and His Church. The Church believes that anyone who espouses error cannot be saved, for by departing from the deposit of Faith and the Church, which is the vehicle of salvation Christ left as His legacy on earth, that person has left from the Truth of Christ and embraced their own will. Anyone who is saved in spite of this can only be saved by invincible ignorance, that is, that there was no possible chance for them to have discovered the truth. Since such a circumstance is unlikely, it is of Faith that most if not all are given the means to find out the truth. The problem is that so often, few take up the challenge to lay aside their distractions and self love and seek the Truth of Christ despite the changes it would mean for their own lives. Because of this inherent laziness in men, the Church is very vigorous in Her missionary work and Her desire to be recognized by nations, that God's Gospel may shine to all and so make the quest for salvation easier for all mankind.

As Christians that's what they believe, and yet they feel you can pray a person out of pergutory. So there is conflict in their doctrine.

AnswerActually the concept of purgatory is only believed by some Christians - especally Roman Catholics. For the rest, purgatory is regarded as a human invention rather than a scriptural truuth.

The belief that Jesus is the only way to heaven comes from John 14:6 where Jesus says: ""I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

However, from the original Greek this could also be interpreted as ' No one comes to the Father except through what I represent."

This complements other passages in scripture that suggests that the key to salvation is God's love and the acceptance of that love as represented in Jesus.

One such passage is in Matthew 25. Jesus says:

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

"The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'

So, Christ IS the only way to heaven, but not in the way that some Christians think. We are saved, whether we recognise it or not, by Christ's death and resurrection, but beyond that it is by our love and God's love that we are accepted into heaven.

Yes. He says, "No one comes to the Father except through me." Anyone who rejects Jesus cannot be saved, but people who are innocently ignorant of Christ and His Church can possibly be saved, but it will still be through Christ and His Church.
