They do not have "mean" personalities. Like all dogs, they require proper training and good socialization, and with that are wonderful dogs.
No dog is exactly alike, but Chows are incredibly loyal and generally bond to one person as their "favorite".

Chow are like Cocker Spaniels....they will eat anything that won't eat them first. Actually many Chows like dry dog food over meats and moist food. They tend to eat alot of table scraps which isn't good for them. Mainly they like dry dog food though.

There is no correct answer for this one. You could say somewhere between the lab and chow, but I've seen many mixes that looked like pure bread animals. Sometimes only an experienced person can really tell, and to be honest, a mixed breed can (sometimes) make a better pet (The breeders will hate me for that one). 30+ years with chow chows has taught me that Chows can be very hard headed and mean (protective) animals. Mixing with a lab can produce many good qualities. You can train a chow to fetch your neighbors dog a lot quicker than a ball.

In Northern China and Mongolia they are called "Songshi Quan" which means "Puffy Lion Dog" you should Google image search "Chow Chow" and "Songshi Quan" A COMMON MISCONCEPTION is that they have very bad temperaments. THIS IS NOT TRUE! I currently own 2 purebred Chow Chows, and my family bred them growing up. I have NEVER encountered a mean Chow, not a stranger's, not any that I or my parents owned... and my parents rescued a 3 year old male that was not neutered from an abusive home. They are a stubborn breed, though. If you want a dog that will ALWAYS listen to commands this isn't it, even if they are well trained, and they are given a command they TECHNICALLY will obey it. I.E. If you tell it to 'come' it may walk over to you then immediately turn and walk away.

If you mean like Chow as in a Chow Chow then I know for a fact that they were originally bred (but not solely bred) for food. So, in short, people.

Is chow chow a non barking dog?
No Chows are stubborn, headstrong and difficult to train unless you have a lot of time to spend with them and really know what you're doing (or send them to a professional). They can also be hard to socialize with other dogs. Yes The preceding answer is incorrect, and reflects a lack of experience with the breed. Chows are more intelligent than other dogs, so inexperienced handlers often have trouble training and socializing them. Sending them to a professional trainer is pointless, because a chow will not take orders from a stranger -even if it understands the command. But they are fanatically loyal and obedient and easy to train for the small group of people they love. If this is your first dog, or you have small children; pick another breed. If you know how to handle a dog and do not anthropomorphize them too much; the chow is an outstanding companion and guardian. Unfortunately for many trainers; you have to be smarter than the dog.
