This depends on how literal The Bible is interpreted by the Christian.
If the bible is interpreted as it is written then the Christian should truly believe that an atheist friend will burn in hell for all eternity.
If the bible is not interpreted as it is written (which happens quite frequently when it benefits sense of well being in the Christian) then they believe that at some point along the line that the atheist will go into heaven one day with them too.
