All dogs shed if they have fur. Goldens may shed a bit more because they have longer fur but don't let that put you off - they're amazing dogs!
Goldens' Foundry was created in 1882.
No. Goldens have medium-length hair with varying amounts of feathering. (Feathering is longer hair on certain spots ... Google some images of Golden Retrievers and you will see differences in the amount of feathering.) If you want a short-haired retriever get a Labrador Retriever .. they have short hair all over without feathering. (Labs are more energetic and somewhat less easier to train than Goldens though.) Just a thought .... but if you are looking for a "shorthaired Golden" because you think short-haired dogs shed less .... that is NOT at all true!! That is a persistent myth for some strange reason but it has absolutely NO basis in reality. Short hair does NOT mean the dog will automatically shed less. In fact, most short-haired dog breeds shed far MORE than Goldens ... examples are Dalmations and Corgis. Both those breeds shed FAR more than Goldens ... they just shed a lot of shorter hairs! Another fact is that most non-shedding breeds also happen to have the LONGEST hair ... like Maltese and Shih Tzu breeds.
The Goldens are five seventeen-year olds who happen to be in charge of the Graveyard (in the beginning) along with the Admiral.

Goldens do tend to be heavy panters, BUT if this is something new that your dog has not done before then there could be some underlying problem. First off, Goldens do tend to gain weight easily, especially when they get older, and people tend to feed Goldens too much food because Goldens tend to act like they are always hungry. Is your 8 year old Golden overweight? If so, a diet/exercise program will eventually stop the panting problem if it is due to weight issues. One common problem in older Goldens is hypothyroid ... low thyroid function. This can sometimes make the dog pant more, and also may make the Golden's coat drier and shed more. A simple blood test at the vet can check for thyroid function. If it's too low then a very inexpensive medication will control it and stop the excess panting, along whatever else may be caused by the low thyroid function. Older Goldens can sometimes be prone to heart conditions. If your Golden is not overweight he or she could still have developed a heart condition. Take the dog to a vet ... if the Golden does have a heart condition don't panic!! Heart conditions in older Goldens are generally easily treatable with inexpensive medication and sensible exercise.
Labradors, they have the best intellagents, they are more loyal and are rated most popular dogs. Golden retrievers shed to much and are more afraid to save a life, a labrador will jump in to see if you are hurt no matter who you are. They are life savers so go against goldens! go for labs!
