No, a preamp is not always necessary for subwoofer sound. You will, however, always need some form of "crossover" to ensure that you only send bass frequencies to your subwoofer.
While a good receiver is important, the subwoofer is really in control of sound quality.
There are many places online to buy a preamp. Amazon sell a range of preamp products including ultra compact preamps. The site Preamp also stocks a wide range of preamps.
yes but the sound quality aint good enough :)
Yes a subwoofer can be plugged into a stereo without an amp but it wont sound good and wont hit anywhere near as hard as if you had it runnin through an amp... get an amp

Besides for the obvious online choices like eBay or Amazon, a few other good websites you could check out for a good preamp would be from sites like sweetwater or homestudiocorner.
One can typically expect to pay at least $200 for a good quality powered subwoofer.
I don't know which is the top subwoofer, but i prefer quality than brand. I love the good mix of sound quality.
Ideally, each speaker in a set reproduces a separate audio channel. If you want to listen to two-channel stereo recordings from your AM/FM tuner or CDs, you'll need left and right stereo speakers, available in a variety of sizes that project sound in front of a listener. You can purchase additional speakers to experience the magic of surround sound and thundering bass while watching movies.
