Yes� most people think because SQL is generally kept in a firewall that you don't need added security but you do.

Since statistics show that most attacks occur from within, making the SQL server as secure as possible should be a critical task no matter where it exists.

All servers have weaknesses and SQL is no exception. Always make sure you secure and have backups.
