Before being called 'Jews', they were called 'Hebrews': descendants of Abraham the 'hapiru' = 'wanderer'. Abraham would have been a polytheist (believer in many gods) before God called him. After the Hebrews settled in the Promised Land, they were called Israelites, and later, Jews.

So technically, the answer is "no", because they were not called 'Jews' until long after they became monotheists (believers in one God).

Judaism is strictly monotheistic, meaning it has one God. In daily conversation, most Jews refer to Him as 'HaShem' which means 'The Name'.

Supreme being of judaisim?

The supreme being of Judaism is God. The Jewish God is omnipotent, omnipresent, omnibenevolent, and has many names. Jews do not believe in a devil or a hell, or that God has ever had a human manifestation. Nowadays, however, more and more Jews are becoming agnostic or atheist. One survey even says that 52% of Jews do not believe in God.

What do Jewish people actually believe religiously?

Unlike Christianity, where belief is a big thing, Jews have traditionally emphasized behavior as being more important than belief. What you do matters more than why you do it or what you believe about it. I guess you could say that that in itself is a typical Jewish belief. The central creedo of Judaism is "Hear oh Israel, the Lord your God, the Lord is one!" This rules out all forms of polytheism. Jews do not agree on what God is. In fact, one of the greatest Jewish philosophers, Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, or Maimonides, said that we cannot say anything positive about God, but can only define God by what God is not. Most Jews will agree that if you think you have a definite idea of what God is, you are probably wrong because whatever God is, it is more than we can imagine.

What is the islam god like?

Muslim's God is the same God worshiped by Christians and Jews. God has no equivalence and no resemblance. Answer: The God - the Only God - is shown clearer by the Qur'an. His Oneness, His Attributes; all are more clearly explained in the Qur'an - much more so than in the Bible. That's simply because it is the Final Revelation from the God of Abraham and Moses and Jesus.

Are Jews materialistic?

No. Jews are no more materialistic than any other group of people. The idea that prevails in society that Jews value material things is a derivative of the Anti-Semitic myth of Jews having an affinity and love of money. In reality, it is much easier to diagnose a person's materialism by their wealth, not their religion. Wealthier Jews tend to be more materialistic than the majority of Jews (who are Middle or Lower Middle Class). This is no different than what we see among Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Atheists.Jewish religion and tradition actually emphasizes the spiritual connection that Jews are to have with God and this should obviate concerns with the material. As a result, we find a correspondingly smaller proportion of Orthodox Jews among the "Wealthy Jew" group than their overall proportion within Judaism.
