Some do although the majority currently do not. Although the official national party stance is anti-gay marriage, many Republicans have rejected the party's hard line stance.

  • Republican presidential candidate front runner Mitt Romney has supported rights for gay couples in Massachusetts .
  • A Republican controlled senate in New York recently approved a gay marriage bill.
  • Many groups such as Republicans for Gay Marriage have been formed at both state and national levels.

The Republican party opposes legislation that would give homosexuals equal marital rights under the law as those enjoyed by heterosexuals.

Critics of the Republican party state that same-sex marriage is actually a non-issue for most Republicans, and that this issue is used as a way to identify with social conservatives in order to secure their votes. Most Republicans are not concerned with this issue other than for it's ability to be highly politicized.

Politics are not simple. A two-party system means that often the members within that party agree on most things, but not on all of the issues. Additionally, some politicians take false positions on issues that are less important to them in order to secure votes. This is what is referred to as pandering to voters. Both parties are guilty of it, but same-sex marriage is a major pandering issue for Republicans.

----------

It depends on the person. Republicans in each state have different levels of support for same-sex marriage, and/or gay civil unions or domestic partnerships.

Overall, the Republican party has been anti-same-sex marriage, although there is trending support (among all parties) of increased support for this and gay civil unions or domestic partnerships.

Answer to other possible interpretation of this question: Again depending on person, the majority of Republicans and American people currently do not believe same-gender marriage is a right though this too is trending positive. Some consider same-gender marriage a misnomer depending on their definition of marriage; thus if there was no such thing as gay marriage, there could not be a rights for the non-existent relation.

Statistical Information:

A 2012 poll of Republicans in the United States showed:

  • 51% of Republicans under the age of 30 support same-sex marriage; 46% oppose it.
  • 47% of Republicans who oppose the Tea Party support same-sex marriage; 52% oppose it.
  • 34% of Republicans who are neutral toward the Tea Party support same-sex marriage; 62% oppose it.
  • 13% of Republicans who support the Tea Party support same-sex marriage; 84% oppose it.

Some do and some don't. Republicans are largely divided on the issue.

The Republican Party is strongly opposed to same sex marriage. They believe that heterosexual marriages must be defended by preventing gay couples from marrying. This irrational belief is one of the central principles of conservatism.

A basic nutshell of the Republican Party is that they are for more "traditional" practices. While I am as liberal as you an get, the Republican Party typically cites The Bible as their motivational force, and we all know that damned Leviticus passage ...

However, there are some Republicans who are pro gay-marriage. But sadly, the general Republican Party is against gay marriage.

they dont like it

ANSWER: I'm a Republican, and, yes I am a Christian, but that is a good thing, not bad. I don't hate the gay people, but I hate their belief.

Republicans are individual people and some may agree with gay marriages and some may not. However, it is the final vote that counts.

A handful of Republican politicians have gone on the record saying that they felt that the GOP is on the wrong side of history in opposing gay marriages, and will ultimately hurt the party brand by being labeled for bigotry. However, that is not direct support for same sex marriage so much as it is a denouncement of the current GOP strategy to gain votes by coming out against same-sex marriage.

Same-sex marriage is a highly politicized issue used by the GOP (Republicans) to gain votes for reelection. While there are most certainly Republican politicians who will privately state that they either support same-sex marriage or, more often, that it is a non-issue to them that has low priority, they cannot take this position publicly as this is an issue that can be used politically to fire up the religious base of the Republican right in order to obtain votes.

If you are referring to non-politicians, there are some Republicans who support same-sex marriage, just as there are a few Democrats who are against it. There are even a small number of gay Republicans, and they certainly support equal rights for homosexuals, including equal treatment under the law for both heterosexuals and homosexuals.

Surveys show that the majority of Americans now support same-sex marriage, with younger voters largely being supportive while older are less supportive. This means that the issue may be decided simply by having older politicians (and voters) moving on due to old age.

Not all of them are like that, but many of them side with christians, and the christians don't support gay marriage because "the bible says marriage is a holy union between a man and a woman" or whatever they like to say. Basically, its a sucking up to Demographics thing. Christians are one of their huge voter demographics. They gotta suck up to them.

It conflicts with their morals and values.

Republicans think that gay people should not be aloud to get married because it is wrong and anyway u should being doing girls instead.I personally think that everyone should want to do girls even if they are a girl

The more moderate of them support "civil unions," but not "gay marriage." The most conservative support therapy and occasionally exorcisms for all of those who are "afflicted" with homosexuality.

Hi! The answer to this question has a lot of variation, so I'm going to try not to be overly general. First, there are a noticeable number of Republicans who have absolutely no problem with gay marriage. Although this may come as a surprise, there are some gay Republicans (although many - myself included - have trouble seeing how that is anything but masochism).

Many of the more liberal Republicans accept civil unions, meaning that a gay couple receives all the associated legal benefits that a straight couple would get, but it isn't church-sanctioned or officially allowed to be called 'marriage.'

That said, the majority of Republicans are against gay marriage. Apart from more general feelings of fear or disgust, the biggest problem people have is that it conflicts with (yep, you guessed it) the Bible. Something like ~75% (but don't quote me on that!) of Republicans are Christian.

Now, the Bible doesn't specifically deal with gay marriage, as the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) were written circa 60-100 AD. But the Bible does denounce being gay: "a man shall not lie with a man as he would a woman" or something like that. Although, for the record, people who point out the anti-gay stuff in the Bible are ignoring Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, where JESUS SAYS to 'turn the other cheek' and 'love thy neighbor as thyself.' Go figure. The Bible is full of hypocrisies.

Overall, most Republicans see gay marriage as unbiblical, and since there's nothing* about it in the constitution, most Republican politicians have no trouble denouncing it.

*Actually, there's far from nothing about gay marriage in the Constitution. If you want, I have a couple of amendments you can look at ;)

Some Republicans are genuinely opposed to gay marriage.

Most Americans are against gay marriage at this time, particularly in specific regions. Republicans have used this issue as a major part of their platform. It helps drive out the vote.
The Republican party opposes legislation that would give homosexuals equal marital rights under the law as those enjoyed by heterosexuals. The reasoning given is that they feel the government should legislate against what they believe to be an immoral choice based on the tenants of their religion.

The Republican Party officially opposes the legalization of same-sex marriage. The state and national platforms of the Republic Party have language stating that position. Many Republican elected officials and candidates publicly oppose same-sex marriage. Very few have spoken out in favor of it. A growing trend among Republican elected officials is to avoid addressing the issue because of its divisiveness and/or inevitability and focus instead on other issues of interest to their constituents.
