No. Shimano for instance originally supply a special joining pin instead of a Master link(or quick link). Chains for single-speed or internally geared bikes can usually be opened or closed using only the stock pins that are already used everywhere in the chain. Quicklinks are useful for maintenance and can be easily retrofitted to any bike chain.
