Most caterpillars form cacoons to turn into butterflies but if they have some sort of illness or are not able to form a cacoon they will not but their ultimate goal is to turn into butterflies.

Well, I think so, because I was on my sisters balcony and she found this wierd dirt cocoon thing. She didn't know what it was so she sprayed it and it fell off the place it was hanging. Then after we left it a little catapillar head came out and started draging itself along the ground with its body inside. So I suppose that there is a catapillar that makes dirt cocoons :)
