Hawaii is thankfully a state where it is legal to ship wine to, however it has restrictions. Any wineries shipping directly to any one of Hawaii's islands has to have a Direct Wine Shipper's Permit, approved and issued by the local land commission. It also has to be registered with the Hawaii Department of Taxation. Currently, wineries with the proper approval are also only allowed to ship up to 6 9-liter cases per year to any particular household, and they have to cover all general excise and gallongae taxes. Basically, it is smart to ask the winery or company from which you wish to purchase wine, to see if they can ship wine to Hawaii, as it will be different for every state.
It is often difficult to decide what one wants to do with one’s time. Often people end up spending their free time doing routine things because they can’t think of anything else. Touring wineries can offer a relaxing, fun, and beautiful alternative to the same old, same old. Northern California wineries specifically are known for their beauty. Rolling hills of vineyards change color from season to season. The spring season features green hills and mustard flowers growing among the vines, while the late summer brings golden hills and ripening vines. Thus, even those who do not drink wine can enjoy wine tasting simply because it allows them to drink in all of the beauty of the region. When wine tasting, it is important to keep in mind that wine companies differ greatly in terms of price. It is a good rule of thumb to assume that companies that create cheap wine will charge less for tasting, while ones that produce more expensive wine will charge more. There are some that offer free tastings, but these are not nearly as common as wineries that do charge. Some offer memberships, which can lead to deals on wines or free/discounted tastings. Wine brands also vary in type of wine. As most people know, wine comes in both white and red. However, it gets much more complex than that. Not only are there various types of reds and whites, there are also blush wines, dessert wines (which are very sweet), ports, and sparkling wines. When touring wineries, it helps to know what types of wine one likes beforehand. It may be helpful to start at a winery that has many different types of wine before heading to more specialized wineries. When wine tasting, it is often helpful to plan out a route that a group wants to take based on their favorite wines brands and types. It is extremely important to have a designated driver. If a group is lucky enough to have a member that does not want to drink, then they of course can drive. Otherwise, there are plenty of options, ranging from taking the wine train to renting a personal limo.
