....Depending where the bat/bats live in the first place, YES they can fly during the daylight hours. Also, they can see color AND they can see you. Bats are extremely active starting at Sunset and well into the night. If one flies toward you, don't startle it, as it may become disoriented, land on or near you and it will bite (rabies concern - get to a Dr immediately if bitten). Bats have been known to bite infants, small children, the elderly and diabetics (because of fruity breath smell) while asleep. If you know there are bats in your area, please secure all screens and windows and any other random openings in your house's structure of which you are aware. And yes, they will get into basements, too - they fly high and low and love to crawl like mice. We had one roosting in the eave of our porch and it became as a pet, crawling across the porch when we sat out and even sat on our chairs - we never handled it, it never bothered us and one day, for some reason, my husband decided to take a broom to him and he never returned. I, for one, was upset. A single bat in a room of your house can usually be shooed out of an open widow with a broom - an infestation of bats beneath a roof or in an attic will need an exterminator who will professionally remove them. All in all, they are very docile creatures if left alone.

Some bats living on remote islands where there are no birds of prey are known to forage during daytime. Most bats are nocturnal, foraging only at night, or crepuscular, only foraging at dawn and dusk.

Why do bats use ecolaocation instead of sight?

Bats are nocturnal animals, which means they are active during the night and sleep during the day. They also tend to live in very dark places. Because they usually fly in the dark, sight would not help them much (because you can't see without light). Echolocation can be used without light, so bats use it to help them fly inplaces where they can't see.

How do bats fly in the dark?

With their wings, if they can fly during the day there is no reason they cannot fly at night. However, if you mean why can they fly in the dark without hitting things, it is because they use sonar to navigate. The bat sends out a call and then listens for the echo, from the time between when it sent out the call to when the echo arrives it can work out how far away things are and so avoid them.
