Well a bat uses it's larynx (vocal chords) to emit a sound waves that they listen for , and when those sound waves bounce of of objects or animals that are closer they come back faster then things farther away, which can effectively form a detailed map of where the bat is at. Think of it like a ship's radar system.
Of course. It helps them see they make there sound and if the sound bounces back there's a wall and if it doesn't bounce back they carry on flying.

I think that Henry Hess invented echo-sounding devices for mapping the ocean floor. But I am not 100% sure that is the correct answer. LOL <3
