While bears do not normally prey on people, they are carnivores and will eat most available meat - and people are meat. Most bears will tend to avoid people. Polar bears don't shy away from anything and don't normally encounter people so they have not learned any aversion for humans and will attack and eat them if they happen to be hungry. The same is true for Kodiak bears to a lesser degree.
