The comment above is exactly correct with respect to English. If you are going from German, for example, and looking at English as a second language, "swim" means "schwimmen" if you are talking about a person moving across the water using arms and legs for propulson. A person can also "float" by taking a deep breath and remaining still at the surface (still "schimmen" in German). A boat, leaf, or twig floats. If a leaf follows moving water downstream, it still "floats" in English ("treiben" in German).
