Yes, bobcats can mate with cougars. Why would they do this? The theory of over hunting of a mountain lion species in an area lends to this. Years ago, the California Mountain Lion was not protected and ranchers regularly hunted the cats down for reason of depredation. The decrease in lion population left the door open, so to speak for cross breading. They both have 38 pair of chromosomes. Still researching to understand what I saw. The animal has a short tail which indicates not a recessive gene from a mountain lion but a dominant gene from a bobcat. The hair coat is long, and may appear to be red in color. The size of the animal varies with females being shorter in height. A mountain lion has 6 mammae and a bobcat has 4 mammae, both carnivore, both occupy the same habitat, both have a radius that overlaps, white tail deer prey in common, bobcats are opportunistic hunters eating small prey, the cross eats primarily white tail, goat, calves and smaller prey. More research is being done. These cross cats have been seen.
no bobcats are to small to breed to mountain lions it could ownly have if man messed with genetics to alow them to breed
There is a lot more involved in wild cats breeding than anything man could do with genetics. The female must suffer some trauma to ovulate. (Biting the female on back of neck after ejaculation, and removing a very rough penis) If a bobcat could accomplish this trauma several times, cross breeding might be possible. It would likely be possible for the bobcat to be successful only where both species are sparsely populated. The cross breeding has many factors to deal with before genetics could even be a consideration. I personally believe it is remotely possible, and if so, I don't think anyone would be present to mess with genetics or anything else.
No wild cats hardly ever interact with household cats
PufferFish31> Unless the bobcat has just recently had kits and the cat happens to be the babies same EXACT size. otherwise, your cat may end up as a midnight snack.
Technically yes but practically No. Animals do not cross-breed. They mate only with their kind. So, the chances of such an event of a mountain lion mating with a bob cat is extremely rare or even improbable.
they do fight when it comes to the territory.
Mating occurs in the month of February and the month of March with a time period of 62-70 days.
The bobcat is a species of lynx so would have little problem mating with other species.
