The pop heard when firing a rifle is partly the sound of gas exiting the barrel after the bullet is out and partly the crack of the bullet breaking the sound barrier. This happens close to the muzzle, so unless you were sitting at the feet of person firing, the pop would not be anywhere near over your head. You are more likely to hear a whistle than a pop, if anything at all.
