Yes..They do seem to fade.
You smelt it in a furnace, with a fuel source such as coal at the bottom and the ore at the top.
There are various methods depending on which ore it is. Most start with physically crushing to ore into small pieces. The ore is then exposed to a combination of heat, chemicals and physical processes that result in a liquid molten metal that is poured into ingots.
Ore, as in rocks which contain sufficient metal to extract and it is economical to do so. Ores include bauxite, a copper ore. Ores can be used to extract precious metals which in turn can be used for electrical wiring, in the case of copper or as a catalyst, in the case of Haematite, Iron ore (the haber process).
Quicksilver mine in Dawnstar town has 5 veins to dig up the ore, take or find a pickaxe. There is a smelter at the entrance to turn the ore into ingots :-)
To turn iron ore into iron requires a fuel and a flux, frequently coal and limestone. It usually costs less money to ship the iron ore than it does the coal and the limestone, especially if those two are close together. So shipping costs are the reason.
Uranium ore is not...uranium ore !
In order to to get iron ingots, you need to smelt iron ore.
The obvious reason: the exploiter hopes to extract enough metal from the ore to turn a profit.

There are 2 silver ore rocks south of Varrock. If you exit Varrock using the west entrance and follow the wall south, on your minimap, you'll see a pickaxe logo. This is where the silver ore is. With at least 41 crafting, you can go to the Crafting Guild. With a white apron, go to the south entrance of Falador and follow the road south from the entrance. When you get to the first turn, follow the road west. There will be another turn - follow the road south and you are at the crafting guild. Go to the mining area of the building. There is a decent amount of silver ore here.
