We used to have chipmunks in this area of Long Island but they've been gone for decades. Not sure why - apparently the fox population increased starting in 1998 so that may be related. But no biologists or ecologists seem to have noticed that the chipmunk population has decreased drastically on Long Island, at least in some areas.
