People do not all have the same idea of what constitutes freedom. Capitalists would say that a free market offers vastly more freedom than the command economy of a communist state. However, communists would say that they have freed themselves from wage slavery and the exploitation of the rapacious capitalist class. Capitalism sometimes means that you have the freedom to starve to death in an uncaring society. Although not all capitalist societies are uncaring. There are many different ways of practicing either capitalism or communism, and many different ways of interpreting the results. The collapse of the Soviet empire in 1990 suggests that the capitalist viewpoint is more popular. But the economic crises that capitalist countries around the world are facing right now (in 2013) suggest that capitalism might also collapse. So, we have no perfect economic systems. All economic systems can be made to work well or work badly, depending upon what people actually do with them. My personal reaction is that I would feel more free in a capitalist society than a communist society.

What are some objections that capitalists have about socialism?

Most members of capitalistic societies feel that they have more control over their own lives: where they can live, how to earn a living, or what to teach teach their children. They can participate in commerce as little or as much as they feel comfortable with, not having to fear repercussions for their choice. Most understand that capitalist societies have varying degrees of flexibility, and are not all the same. There are benefits and disadvantages to either system. Any political system has the capacity to become oppressive, but modern history has demonstrated that a socialist system has a much shorter life span than a capitalist society.
