Wool is generally warmer than cotton, due to the air spaces in wool.
Cotton - it's a natural fibre, with air-spaces between the threads. Rayon is a manufactured fibre - much thinner than cotton, and with less breathable spaces between the strands.
Well, Cotton garments became popular around the 1750's. I am not quite positive. But I am writing a paper on it and that is the only time period that I have on the notes I have!
Chemical finishes are used on cotton garments for multiple reasons; these include removing the natural wax and fiber impurities and making the cotton stronger and less abrasive.

Most liposuction garments are made out of spandex to help with the stretching of the skin. Some are made out of cotton as well.

cotton balls are a good insulator because they contain many air filled spaces, the tiny pockets trap air in the cotton balls preventing energy from being transferred. So there is less heat transfer.
First of all, cotton has air spaces in between it, so many of us may think it is a poor conductor. But actually, saw dust is a poorer conductor of heat than cotton.
The density of cotton is less than the density of water because cotton is less compact and has a lot of air spaces in its structure. This makes it less dense overall compared to the closely packed molecules in water.
