Because fish live in water and their eyes are always wet, they don't need to blink and have no eyelids. So you will never see a fish with its eyes closed - but yes, they do sleep. Most fish are diurnal (active during the day) and at night will find a quiet spot in a corner or hidden behind something. They will stop moving and their fin movement will slow or stop altogether. Their breathing rate slows down and their eyes do not flicker from side to side. They are asleep. Fish are light sleepers and wake easily, but will panic if woken suddenly, which is why you should avoid turning on the lights when the room is still dark - turn the room lights on or open the curtains first as a sudden transition from 'night' to 'day' is very stressful.

Some fish have clear eyelids so it appears that their eyes are open when they sleep. Other fish simply leave their eyes open, but to answer your question, most fish do sleep.

All fish sleep. It's just that since they have no eyelids, and doesn't really look like they're sleeping. Some rest against a rock or are just motionless in the water at night...

Do some fish sleep?

Summary: Fish do rest but their "sleep" is different than land animals. Although most fish "sleep", some are still under speculation because some animals need to move to survive, similarly to a shark. Most all fish spend time in an energy-saving state that can be called "rest", and we might even call their behavior "sleep", though it is probably different than "sleep" in most land animals. Many fish, like Bass and perch, rest on or under logs at night. Coral reef fish active in the day, hide and rest in crevices and cracks in the reef to avoid being eaten at night. The resting behavior of fish is very different from their behavior the rest of the day. Many minnows, for example, which are very active in schools during the day, scatter and remain motionless in shallow water at night. Many fish "rest" or "sleep" during the day and are active at night instead, but almost all fish sleep.
