Carlos Ribeiro followed Drosophila foraging habits for several weeks and found that fruit flies choose between different food sources according to their nutritional requirements, gender and mating status.
Carlos describes their findings, 'Normally when kept on "complete with sugar and yeast) and given the choice, flies do not eat food with (yeast-enriched). However, after a few days on a proteinflies preferred a yeast-rich diet. Female flies switch diets more quickly than males, and mated females quicker than virgin females.
The old adage about attracting more flies with honey than with vinegar doesn't hold for fruit flies. They are attracted to vinegar because it usually indicates fermenting fruit. They taste their food with their feet before they eat. Like most other flies with sponging mouthparts, they first moisten the food with digestive enzymes before they lap it up.

Anything pretty ripe and sweet. They usually don't go for sours, but anything can do anything. :) They don't like rotten or unripe fruit. (Nor do we..) But, it really varies.
Every species has evolved to fill some specific ecological niche. In the case of fruit flies, they eat fruit. Had they evolved to eat other insects instead, they might have been wasps.
they ride it in derbys
Fruit flies are attracted to the smell of the fruit, they fly to the fruit to get to it. There they breed and lay their eggs so some fruit flies are born on the fruit.

Fruit flies infest fruit by actually burrowing into the fruit, and laying their eggs inside of it. So when they hatch, the fruit flies then devour their environment
