Yes. Any type of snake will bite if it feels threatened. Garter snakes do have venom but it is very mild and they do not have well-developed fangs to help deliver it.

Yes they are venomous, however, the venom is house in the back teeth and used many for immobilizing prey. This venom is not toxic to humans, but can cause mild to severe itching, swelling, and in the case of an untreated allergic reaction, it can be fatal. Most would say it is far less painful than a bee sting, and most often you wouldn't even feel it.

A garter snake is a non poisonous snake. It can, of course, open it's mouth and

try to bite down on part of your body, but it's not very strong and would likely

not cause you any harm if it did. Garter snakes are known as being very shy animals and make good pets if you get one and treat it well. When I was a boy, I was told that if I had to have a run-in with a snake, try to find a garter snake if one was available.
