No body knows. Some think it's because they have a strong bond and others think it's because the strict hierarchy. Anyway gray wolves do mate for life and have a very strong almost unbreakable bond with each other (In my own personal opinoin).
The alpha wolf often chooses one mate, an alpha female, to mate and breed with. Depending on its courtship, this bond may last until the death. Between then they usually have pups and make sure that no other female wolves reproduce. The alpha female is the sole creator of life in the pack. If another female wolf does reproduce, it is usually attacked by the alpha female, or possibly killed. It is probable that if the alpha female dies, which is usually unlikely since the pack keeps her safe, then the alpha male pack leader will choose another mate to breed with.

Yes
Raising cubs is challenging. They have a greater chance of keeping the cubs alive until adulthood with both parents hunting for them.
Also, wolves are generally pack animals, and want other wolves around them.
The only wolves in a pack that are allowed to mate are the alpha male and alpha female. No other male can mate with the female as long as he runs the pack. If he should die or be driven off, the next male in the hierarchy would then take over. The same would happen if the female alpha died or left the pack.
A pack usually produces a single litter unless the breeding male mates with one or more subordinate females. Thus, there can be multiple mates through the life span.
Nobody knows why but I think it is because they want to provide a protective bond btween eachother
