V. C. G. Richardson has written: 'Diseases of small domestic rodents' -- subject(s): Rodents as pets, Diseases, Rodents 'Diseases of domestic guinea pigs' -- subject(s): Guinea pigs, Diseases
All living things carry "germs," including people. Bacteria live in our mouths and digestive system and on our skin. Guinea pigs don't carry diseases any more than other domesticated animals and probably a lot less. Guinea pigs normally don't carry any diseases that can be transmitted to humans except in rare circumstances and a vet should be able to tell you if that particular guinea pig is sick. Handling them or buying one as a pet should be perfectly safe.
No, they do not have pockets in their cheeks to carry food.
