Here in NZ we have two types of hawk, local names Kahu and Karearea. The Australian one, a natural arrival in NZ, eats rabbits and other road kill, such as Australian opossums (both a serious pest), as the occasion offers.
The Karearea is actually a falcon, Falco novaseelandiae. It prefers live food, and small birds form a good part of the diet.
