The kind of hermit crabs most people think of are Land Hermit Crabs. They live on land, and need at least enough water to submerge themselves. Land Hermit Crabs do need sea salt to keep their body chemistry balanced, and as such, need access to both salt and fresh water.
Marine Hermit Crabs require a full saltwater aquarium to survive. Such tanks are elaborate, and should be researched thoroughly before purchase. Saltwater pets of all sorts are often regarded as difficult to care for.
Marine hermit crabs can only live in an ocean style fish tank with correct salinity, calcium and pH. Land Hermit Crabs cannot live under water. There are no known hermit crabs at this time that live in fresh water although there are several terrestrial crabs that do, like fiddler crabs and moon crabs, however they do not live fully underwater and require dry land to climb out on and rest and molt.
Is is true that hermit crabs drink fresh water but they also drink salt water.
Mostly water. They get it from sponges in the water. They cannot drink out of bodies of water because their mouth cannot sip. So they can only suck the water from sponges.

Land Hermit Crabs consume fresh water. It is suggested by some pet stores to have two watering dishes. One for bottled fresh water and the other for bottled salt water. The hermit crab can choose between the two depending upon the nutrients it feels it needs. If you do not have salt water- that is fine, it is not necessary.
Salt water hermit crabs need to live in ocean water that has been properly set up (like a reef aquarium). Land hermit crabs need access to both fresh and salt water but live the majority of their lives on land.
