Do hermit crabs drink fresh water?

The kind of hermit crabs most people think of are Land Hermit Crabs. They live on land, and need at least enough water to submerge themselves. Land Hermit Crabs do need sea salt to keep their body chemistry balanced, and as such, need access to both salt and fresh water. Marine Hermit Crabs require a full saltwater aquarium to survive. Such tanks are elaborate, and should be researched thoroughly before purchase. Saltwater pets of all sorts are often regarded as difficult to care for.

What kind of shells do hermit crabs live in?

It depends on the type of hermit crab. Purple Pinchers or Carribean crabs like turbo shells, but I have one in a different kind. Ecuadorians like shells with a more wide or oval shaped opening because their body is wider

What are the natural predators of land hermit crabs?

Natural predators of land hermit crabs include birds, reptiles, and some mammals like raccoons and crabs. These predators typically prey on hermit crabs by sniffing them out, knocking them over, and breaking their shells to access the soft body inside.

Can hermit crabs live without heat?

A hermit crab can go with out others but I is highly recommended. Hermit crabs are social animals and like to live together. They get lonely. In the wild hermit crabs live in colonies or clans. It can survive but hermit crabs are colony species, living in groups of hundreds of crabs. They do best with other crabs nearby. I suggest having a minimum of two or three. They can get very lonely. You can have one hermit crab though. But as the person above said, they can get lonely.User:Gab33Not really. For some months yes but if they go a long period of time without any other hermit crab contact they won't be doing so well. If they get lonely then its really not good for them. You really need another hermit crab.

Do hermit crabs lay eggs?

Yes they do.But they only lay eggs in the ocean because the babies have to see water. If you have one as a pet I am 100% sure you won't breed them in your cage.It will not be a sucess. If someone says they suceeded they are lying. Yes, hermit crabs lay eggs. Hermit crabs should NOT be kept in a cage. They need to be in a 10-30 gallon tank with enough sand to completely bury them - as they need to burrow when they molt. When molting they will bury themselves for as long as 1 week to 2 months. If your hermit crab has nowhere to bury themselves when molting they will either retreat into their shell for 1 week - 2 months, or may even die. PLEASE do the proper research before buying hermit crabs. Pet stores may tell you that you can keep them in small cages with a sponge for water, but that is horribly incorrect. Hermit crabs CANNOT breath in regular air. The air needs to be at least 70-80% humidity, and they need to be in a tank that's at least 70 degrees fahrenheit. Hermit crabs can live up to 30 years. Most people only have their crabs from 1 week-3 months because they do not know how to properly care for them. If you own a hermit crab and do not care for them as stated above PLEASE look into either acquiring the proper tools needed for their care, or consider turning them over to an animal sanctuary that cares for hermit crabs.
