I'm not so sure if they need a companion, but they certainly enjoy company. If you are getting pet hermit crabs it would be advisable to get three or four, and as hermit crabs aren't too expensive, you should think about it.

Yes, they have their shells to hide from predators in the wild and they usually have colonies of 100 hermit crabs to hide also.

Despite the name, hermit crabs are actually rather social animals that in the wild tend to live in large colonies. In an aquarium, they tend to do better in groups.

Are hermit crabs social?

No. Hermit crabs live on huge beach colonies and are accustomed to working and traveling in huge groups. Crabs really need to be kept in groups (best case scenario would be in same species group). Crabs should be kept in groups of 3 or more.

Can you keep hermit crabs with other animals in the same habitat?

Very few. Because hermit crabs need to remain stationary to molt they need to be kept with their own kind to avoid being cannibalized. Some owners do add rollie pollie bugs to their crab tanks as cleaners and that has proven to be quiet successful.

What temperature do hermit crabs need to be?

Try to keep their cage between 70-82 degrees. if this is not possible you should spray their cage twice a day with lukewarm water. a couple squirts will keep the cage humid and the hermit happy!

What does a hermit crab need in order to have babies?

Unfortunately, hermit crabs will almost never mate in captivity. A few hobbiest have purchased crabs with a clutch of eggs and have tried to hatch them but it is almost impossible to get the eggs to mature and 10 days seems to be the longest that anyone has kept them alive.

How can you tell the difference between a land and a marine hermit crab?

You can tell a land hermit crab from a water hermit crab by looking at the claws/arms or legs. If it is a water crab it will be blueish and if land crab it will be pinkish purpleish. If your crab is a water crab don't just throw it in water and leave it there, put a tiny bowl in it's tank or cage that is low to the ground and make sure that the water level is a bit lower than the hermit crabs top of its legs. Also have a wet sponge for each kind of hermit crab in the crabs tank.

What do you need or a pet hermit crab?

when having a pet hermit crab come great responsibility..... The are wonderful creatures.Habitat- they should be in a cage that is about 35 cm wide which will fit about 3 hermit crabs they should be given something to climb on and they should have a hidden place but that is optional because they can hide in there shell. in the bottom of they enclosure they should have sand, sand grit which can be purchased at you local pet shop or wood shavings.Heating- Land Hermit Crabs are tropical so they must be kept between 26C and 32C and the temperature should never be allowed to fall below 20C. As hot air rises, the most effective way of heating the aquarium is with a Heatwave Heat Mat that sticks onto the base of the aquarium. These mats emit an even heat over the base which stimulates activity. A desk lamp with a low wattage bulb may also be used. It is important that you place a thermometer in the tank to monitor the temperature.Food- Hermit crabs will eat just about anything that you eat, but no sugary foods such as snacks ECT you should also have a bowl of food given to you by your pet shop. Although it is good for they to eat our food they also need there food to have a balance diet.Water- hermit crabs should have 2 bowls of water 1 bowl full of normal and 1 bowl which has a special type of chemical in it so it helps the hermit crab to Molt.Accessories- in you cage you should have at least 3- 4 spare shells ready for when they Molt. Fake plants so that they can climb on OPTIONAL.Nature- hermit crabs are lovely and very funny. to have a loving hermit crab you should handle it a lot but the only problem is that hermit crabs are more active at night around about 5pm so it is good to handle them then.Stress- Stress among hermit crabs can be caused by:Overcrowding and bullyingExtremes in temperature, too hot or too coldBeing dropped onto hard surfacesA crab kept aloneStress can make crabs inactive and sluggish. They can also come out of their shell and walk about 'naked'. Some crabs just crawl off into the corner and will not return to their shell. This leaves them open to attack from other crabs, and they have no protection. It is not normal for these crabs to walk about without a shell on their soft body.Cleaning- you should clean out your cage at least 1 to twice a week. change there water every day and there food 3- 4 times a week.Enjoy your hermit crab and just a quick note the more you handle and love you crab the longer it will live for.......ENJOY :)

Is it mad if hermit crabs sleep all day?

That depends on what you mean by "sleep." Hermit crabs are nocturnal, which means they usually come out at night. The reason they are nocturnal in their native habitat is because it is too hot for them to come out during the day, though you will see them out and about on overcast days. When hermit crabs are kept in captivity and their conditions are perfect, they will occasionally cease being strictly nocturnal and will roam their cages during the daytime. A hermit crab that stays in its shell, and does not move all winter is probably dead. Winter is a hard time for most hermit crabs, because most hermit crab owners do not understand that hermit crabs must be kept in humid conditions, at temperatures above 75 degrees. When the temperature gets below 65 they start to slow down and will eventually die if they stay cold for too long. If their cage is not humid enough, they will suffocate to death because they require humid air to breathe properly. As a side note, the plastic boxes most places sell as hermit crab cages are TERRIBLE for hermit crabs. A person interested in owning and caring for hermit crabs should be ready to spend at least $50 (preferably more!) on a good home for them, a glass aquarium with a snug-fitting glass lid to hold in humidity, and a reliable heat source.
