If they are already dead, or if a hippo calf wondered off by itself and got caught by a waiting crocodile. Crocs will almost never take on a fully-grown hippo because of the highly aggressive nature of these animals and the fact that hippos always travel in groups. But that being said, a group of large enough crocodiles can kill a hippo and eat it. Normally, hippos generally kill crocodiles out of defense for their young and themselves.
